One Girl, One Voice Fundraising BreakfastMay 15, 2009On Friday, May 15th, almost 200 people including Congressman Dennis Moore gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza to participate in the first annual One Girl, One Voice event. As much a celebration of Young Women on the Move's success as it was a fundraiser, there was a overwhelming response of support and appreciation.
In attendance were 30 of the young women that have participated in the program this year. Seated individually at each table, these girls demonstrated the confidence and social skills they had learned throughout the last year as they greeted and discussed the program and their dreams with the others at the table. In addition, they treated the audience to a dance, Tae Kwon Do, and Tai Chi demonstration. They had been learning these as a part of the fitness program this year. Jeanne Brandmeyer received special recognition for her generous underwriting of the event, and table hosts were thanked for bringing guests to the breakfast event. YWOM is grateful to these strong supporters for introducing others to YWOM and helping ensure that it will continue to be available for more girls next year in the Kansas City, KS, USD 500 school system. Those in attendance were moved by the video that showcased the voices and stories of our young women. In addition to hearing from Mary Beth Gentry, founder and Executive Director, one of our first graduates, Maria Macias, returned to tell her story. It was touching to hear how she overcame multiple obstacles, graduated, and is thriving as she works towards her teaching degree. Her recognition of how YWOM has changed her life and allowed her to find success was reinforced for the audience of the value of this program.
We are pleased to say that the event raised over $35,000. The greatest achievement, though, is the young women that the program has helped. The day was also about young women having the opportunity to meet accomplished professionals, hear stories of creating personal success, and receive recognition for their hard work. One girl told us that she "felt like a princess" that day; the event was a success.
Please continue to be generous with your donatations. You may also download the Powerpoint from the event or watch the video online. |
