After School Programs

The Young Women on the Move after-school program meets each Wednesday afternoon at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 1226 Armstrong Avenue, Kansas City, KS. Bus transportation is provided by USD 500. The program at this time serves the following schools:

  • Argentine Middle School
  • Central Middle School
  • Rosedale Middle School
  • J.C. Harmon High School
  • Wyandotte High School
  • F.L. Schlagle High School

Young women at Harmon, F.L. Schlagle, and Wyandotte High Schools are invited to apply for membership in group sessions that meet weekly during school hours. For more information, please contact us.

Program Components

  • Character Development emphasizing ethical decision making and the core values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Self-awareness and re-focusing of attitudes, beliefs, habits, and expectations:
    • Build self-esteem
    • Create a strong self-image
    • Self-motivation
    • Recognize new opportunities
    • Make effective life decisions
  • Healthy Life Skills: adolescent physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, relationships, nutrition and fitness, social and communication skills, academic success, career exploration, financial literacy, critical thinking, decision making, and goal-setting.
  • Group and individual counseling, therapeutic mental health intervention with LCSW if needed
  • Team-building, a trusting support network, accountability and leadership development
  • One-on-one mentoring
  • Service Learning

Young Women on the Move program components are taught through weekly in-school one hour group sessions at the high schools, weekly 2-3 hour after-school sessions for the middle and high school groups. The sessions include small group discussions, guest speakers, field trips, project-based learning, and service learning events. This active environment gives young women a voice in designing a program that meets their needs, the opportunity to have fun, meet community leaders and explore new sites while promoting healthy development and smart choices.
